Explosions ripped through the Marriott and Ritz-Carlton Hotels in Jakarta on Friday, killing at least four foreigners, police said. Authorities were acting on the assumption the bombing was carried out by Muslim extremists, said a senior counterterrorism official.
The streets outside the two hotels, which sit adjacent to each other in a new business district in central Jakarta, were covered in shattered glass and debris. The faccedil;ade of the Ritz-Carlton was ripped off after an explosion in the restaurant while people were breakfasting, police said.
Indonesia hasn't suffered a major terrorist attack since the 2005 bombings of seafood restaurants on a Bali beach. The Marriott was the target of an earlier bombing, in 2003, when 12 people died.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who appeared to win reelection this month with 60% of the vote, is popular for restoring law and order to Indonesia since coming to power in 2004. He has worked closely with U.S. antiterrorism specialists to train police. A local Muslim terrorist network linked to al-Qaida, Jemaah Islamiyah, which was linked to the earlier explosions, has been largely broken up.
But the senior antiterrorism official said small units of terrorists still had the capabilities to carry out attacks. The police, for instance, recently arrested a terrorism suspect in Central Java who was alleged to be involved in a plan a few years ago to blow up Singapore's Changi airport, he said. 'The name of the group is not important. They still have the capability,' he said.
