土豆网:用户原创与专业视频两手抓

  If popular online video Web site Tudou.com makes good on its goal of breaking even by next year, the feat could put China ahead in the race to monetize the expensive business of user-generated video.

  Like YouTube, Chinese video-sharing Web sites have turned many into overnight video producers, but the companies seem to have realized that professionally produced content may be the better way to go.

  Tudou, which says it will invest 100 million yuan ($14.6 million) in producing original Internet videos─like Internet Millionaire, produced in partnership with Nokia, (http://n97.tudou.com/) ─and acquiring other content in the coming year, streams 100 to 120 million videos daily, compared with the billion-plus daily clip-views on Google Inc.'s Youtube.

  In its earlier days, Tudou was all about user-generated content (UGC), and was home to video clips of Chinese Internet sensations like the Back Dorm Boys. But these days, Tudou estimates as much as 40% of its content is premium, non-UGC content, like popular television shows from Hong Kong and Taiwan. Tudou may be wise to let this percentage grow, since Chinese regulators have clearly been especially nervous about UGC-heavy Web sites this year (e.g. the shutdown of microblogging Web site Fanfou this year and the continuing blocking of Facebook in China).
  土豆网创立之初全是用户原创内容(UGC),也是“后舍男生”等网络流行人物的视频大本营。但现在,土豆网估计其内容最多有40%为优质的非用户原创内容,比如港台流行电视剧。土豆网让这类内容的比例增加或许是明智的,因为中国监管机构今年显然对用户原创内容占很大比例的网站尤其紧张(比如微博网站“饭否”(Fanfou)今年被关闭,Facebook在中国也一直被屏蔽。)

  Asked how much of Tudou's content consists of licensed television shows and films, Anita Huang, Tudou community and marketing vice president, says licensed and acquired programming will grow from a total of 2,300 hours at the beginning of this year to approximately 37,000 hours by the end of 2010. 'Original production is still a tiny fraction in terms of total lengths,' she said.
