China faces "severe challenges" in combating A/H1N1 flu: State Council

China's State Council says the country faces "severe challenges" in fighting the A/H1N1 flu as a sharp increase in confirmed cases was reported in some areas.

At an executive meeting, the State Council noted that groups of students were found infected and the arrival of flu season also challenged the prevention and control of the A/H1N1 virus.

A freshman at the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics had tested positive for A/H1N1 flu and died Tuesday, bringing the death toll of the flu on the Chinese mainland to four.

The State Council has ordered government departments at all levels to beef up measures to prevent large-scale outbreak of the disease and vaccine producers to speed up their production.

 

 

US to further military relationship with China: Obama

US President Barack Obama has pledged to try his best to promote the development of US-China military relations.

During his meeting with vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission, Xu Caihou, at the White House, Obama reiterated that his administration is committed to building an active, comprehensive and cooperative relationship with China.

He also said he's looking forward to his visit to China next month.

General Xu Caihou said China is ready to work with the US to strengthen pragmatic exchanges and cooperation in an effort to develop bilateral military ties in a healthy and stable way.

 

 

China-US trade talks open in Hangzhou

China and the United States are holding the 20th meeting of their Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade in eastern China's Hangzhou city, laying the groundwork for next month's presidential summit in Beijing.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, Trade Representative Ron Kirk and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack are attending the meeting. The Chinese side is led by Vice Premier Wang Qishan.

The Chinese Commerce Ministry says China's status as a market economy will be discussed at the talks.

 

 

Chinese president meets DPRK delegation

President Hu Jintao has met with a delegation of North Korea's Workers' Partyin Beijing.

The delegation was headed by Choe Thae Bok, secretary of the party's Central Committee.

During their talks, president Hu Jintao urged the two sides to work hard to maintain regional peace and stability, and promote common development and prosperity.

 

 

Chinese National Games close as host Shandong tops medal table

The 11th Chinese National Games came to a close on Wednesday after 13 days of fierce competition with the host Shandong topping the medals table.

The final overall medals table reads Shandong on 63 golds, followed by the Chinese Army on 49 and Jiangsu on 48.5.

The Games, billed as China's mini-Olympics, was a true sports extravaganza as five world records, along with 16 Asian records and 39 national records were broken.

 

 

Death toll from blast in Pakistan's Peshawar climbs to 106

The death toll from Wednesday's car blast in northwest Pakistan's Peshawar has mounted to 106 with over 150 injured.

Rescue workers say more people could still be buried under the debris.

The powerful bomb targeted a crowded market and triggered fire in nearby shops while an old building came to ground with the heavy impact.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani have expressed profound grief over the loss of innocent lives. Visiting U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned the terrorist attack, terming it as "cowardly."

 

 

Obama signs defense bill, marks military spending transition

U.S. President Barack Obama has signed a 680-billion-U.S.-dollar defense authorization bill that marks a transition of focus in defense spending from conventional warfare to small conflicts.

The legislation also allows the Pentagon to expand its intelligence operation.

Among the total funds authorized by the law, 550 billion dollars will go to the Pentagon and the national security programs of the Department of Energy, while the rest 130 billion dollars will be used to support war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

 

 

NASA tests next-generation rocket for first time

NASA on Wednesday launched the Ares I-X rocket in Florida, the first flight test for a next-generation launch vehicle system which may send astronauts back to the moon and then perhaps to Mars.

Wednesday's launch also marked the first time a new vehicle has blasted off from the complex since the first space shuttle launch in 1981.

 

 

Agassi joins drug shame list

Tennis great Andre Agassi has shocked the tennis world by admitting in his autobiography that he used the banned substance crystal meth in 1997.

In his book, titled "Open", Agassi revealed that after being informed that he had tested positive for the mind-altering drug, he wrote a letter to the ATP, which oversees the men's professional game, claiming he had taken it by accident and asking for leniency.

No further action was taken.

Agassi is one of only six men to have won all four Grand Slam events.
