China faces "severe challenges" in combating A/H1N1 flu: State Council

China's State Council says the country faces "severe challenges" in the prevention and control of A/H1N1 flu after some areas reported a sharp increase in the number of patients infected by the epidemic.

A statement, issued after a state council executive meeting in Beijing on Wednesday, says groups of students were found infected by the disease and the arrival of flu season also challenged A/H1N1 flu prevention and control endeavor.

The State Council, or the Cabinet, has ordered government departments at all levels to beef up measures to prevent large-scale outbreak of the disease and vaccine producers to speed up their production.

A freshman at the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics had tested positive for A/H1N1 flu and died Tuesday, bringing the death toll of A/H1N1 flu on the Chinese mainland to four.

 

 

China, US to further bilateral military relationship

The two militaries of China and the US have agreed to further the bilateral military relationship and cooperation in a stable and healthy way.

That’s according to vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission Xu Caihou who met with US National Security Advisor James Jones, and Deputy Secretary of State James B. Steinberg separately in Washington Wednesday.

Earlier U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates called for lasting dialogue with China's military when meeting with Xu Caihou.

 

 

Senior Chinese official calls for media cooperation across Taiwan Strait

A senior Chinese mainland official has urged media organizations across the Taiwan Straits to cover more stories on cross-Straits relations and report news events in an objective and comprehensive manner.

Top political adviser Jia Qinglin made the remarks in a meeting with a group of Taiwan media representatives led by Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of the island's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF).

Jia Qinglin said media organizations play an irreplaceable role in promoting information exchanges, helping people on both sides better understand each other and eliminating estrangement.

He's called for an early establishment of resident media bureaus on both sides and closer cooperation between news organizations to promote traditional Chinese culture.

 

 

China holds charity forum in quake-hit province

A charity forum opened Wednesday in southwest China's Sichuan Province that is still recovering from a devastating earthquake last year.

During the two-day event, more than 300 representatives from charity organizations and business from around the world would discuss the role they can play in combating major disasters, relief work and post-disaster rebuilding.

It was the first charity forum hosted by the China Charity Federation after the 8.0-magnitude quake struck Sichuan on May 12 last year, which left around 87,000 people dead or missing.

 

 

Car Bomb blast kills 90 in NW Pakistan's Peshawar

At least 90 people were killed and more than 200 others injured in a powerful bomb blast in northwest Pakistan's city of Peshawar on Wednesday.

A provincial minister says the bomb exploded at a crowded market.

Hospital sources say that scores of the injured are in critical condition.

The police say the majority of those killed and injured were civilians.

More than 25 shops were completely destroyed in the blast.

 

 

12 killed in Kabul UN attack

A suicide Bombing in a guest house used by U.N. staff in Afghan’s capital Kabul killed 12 people Wednesday, including 6 U.N. staff.

A Taliban spokesman has claimed responsibility, saying it was meant as an assault on the upcoming presidential election.

Later, two rockets struck the vicinity of the presidential palace and a luxury hotel, but caused no casualties.

UN Security Council has condemned "in the strongest terms" the deadly attack on a UN guesthouse in Kabul.

 

 

UN General Assembly calls for end to U.S. embargo on Cuba

The UN General Assembly has voted overwhelmingly to call for an end to the U.S. embargo on Cuba.

The vote was cast Wednesday at the 192-member General Assembly with 187 in favor, three against and two abstentions. This is the 18th year that the General Assembly voted to urge an end to the U.S. embargo.

U.S. President Barack Obama has signed a 680-billion-U.S.-dollar defense bill, which includes 7.5 billion dollars for training and equipping Afghan forces.

 

 

NASA tests next-generation rocket for first time

NASA on Wednesday launched the Ares I-X rocket in Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

It's the first flight test for the agency's next-generation spacecraft and launch vehicle system.

 

China's Geely confirmed to bid for Volvo cars

China’s Geely Automobile has been confirmed as preferred bidder in the ongoing discussions concerning the possible sale of Volvo car cooperation. Ford said it will be engaging detailed and focused negotiation with Geely. No final decisions have been made.
