Fees for H1N1 vaccine face punishment

 

The Chinese government has made it clear that anyone charging a fee for H1N1 vaccinations will be punished.

The country initiated the free and voluntary inoculation program in late September and so far at least 5 million people have been vaccinated.

Industry insiders say the free H1N1 vaccination is funded by local governments, so poor areas are more likely to have irregularities.

The central government has vowed to give poor western regions financial assistance to ensure vulnerable people are vaccinated for free.

 

 

China calls for mutual trust, deeper cooperation in food safety issue

 

China's quality watchdog has called for mutual trust and deeper cooperation between nations to improve food safety.

Director of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, Wang Yong , was speaking at the annual China International Food Safety & Quality Meeting in Beijing.

The meeting serves as a platform for countries to share successful experiences in food safety management in a bid to promote technological development and cooperation in the field.

 

 

Global media campaign launched to mark Universal Children's Day

 

A large-scale global media campaign for children' rights has been launched in Beijing in the run-up to Universal Children's Day, which falls on Nov. 20.

The event was co-sponsored by China's Xinhua News Agency and the United Nations Children's Fund, in advance of a planned 24-hour global live multimedia coverage of events on the day.

As of Wednesday, more than 500 worldwide media organizations had confirmed participation in the program, called "Global News Day for Children".

It aims to highlight the international media's role in helping to improve the situation of children's living environment and promoting their healthy growth.

 

 

World Bank upgrades growth forecast to 8.4%

 

The World Bank has revised its forecast for China's economic growth this year - from 7.2 percent to 8.4 percent - and projected a slightly faster pace of expansion in the coming year.

The Washington-based bank was the latest major international financial institution to upgrade predictions - a reflection of its confidence in China's recovery.

But it also sounded a note of caution, pointing out that a sustained recovery will need a shift in the economy to emphasize consumer spending, instead of industry and investment.

 

 

China urges more relief efforts for prolonged drought

 

China's drought relief office has called for immediate and intensified efforts to fight drought in provinces in south China, which has caused water shortage to nearly 2.5 million people.

As of Wednesday, the drought had affected more than 1.2 million hectares of farmland in the region.

The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters says the central government would offer "a huge amount" of subsidies to help ease the drought.

 

 

U.S. requests WTO panel to rule on China raw materials restrictions

 

The United States has requested the World Trade Organization to establish a dispute settlement panel to rule on China's export restraints on raw materials.

But the Chinese Ministry of Commerce has defended China's export policies, saying they are consistent with WTO rules.

An official with the ministry of commerce says the chief aim of China's export policies is to protect the environment and conserve natural resources.

 

 

U.N. General Assembly opens debate on Goldstone report on Gaza conflict

 

The U.N. General Assembly has started an open debate on a report that accuses both Israel and Hamas militants of war crimes during their three-week Gaza conflict that ended in January.

At least 30 speakers were expected to take the floor during the open debate on the Goldstone report, an investigation commissioned by the UN Human Rights Council.

The General Assembly will put a draft resolution to vote after the debate.

 

 

Typhoon Mirinae kills at least 99 in Vietnam

 

At least 99 people have been killed as typhoon Mirinae slammed Vietnam.

The central province of Phu Yen was the hardest hit, where floods and strong winds have claimed at least 69 lives.

Heavy rain keeps battering central provinces of Vietnam. Meteorologists also warned of a high risk of landslides and flash flooding as water levels in rivers keep rising.

 

 

U.S. Fed holds key interest rate steady as economy continues to "pick up"

 

The U.S. Federal Reserve has decided to keep a key interest rate unchanged at a record low of between zero to a quarter percent to prop up the economy.

The Fed says recent information suggests that economic activity has continued to pick up, but likely to remain weak for a time.

 

 

China to hold first humanoid robot Olympics

 

Robot makers around the world can show their creations and compete in the first International Humanoid Robot Olympic Games next June in China's northeastern city of Harbin.

More than 100 universities from about 20 countries are expected to send humanoid robots to compete in 16 events in five categories, including track and field, balls, combat, dancing as well as domestic service such as cleaning and medical care.
