Design and Construction of Inland Nuclear Power Stations Begin

The design and first-phase construction of three inland nuclear power stations in China has begun. That's according to Wang Binghua, the chairman of the State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation. Wang was speaking yesterday at the 2009 China Power Forum.

The new sites are near Xian'ning city in central Hubei Province, Taohuajiang city in central Hunan Province, and Pengze city in east Jiangxi Province.

China's existing nuclear power stations are sited along the east coast.

The inland nuclear power stations will all adopt the most advanced Westinghouse-designed AP1000 pressurized water reactors to meet more stringent safety and environment standards, according to Sun Qin, the general manager of the China National Nuclear Corporation.

China will probably register GDP growth of about 9 percent this year and could soon return to double-digit territory, according to Danny Quah, an economics professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Quah says China's four-trillion-yuan or 588 billion U.S. dollar stimulus package has boosted investment and domestic spending and promoted trade in East Asia.

The economist said the Chinese government is trying hard to transform economic growth stimulus from exports to domestic consumption, and believes China can accomplish it without too much difficulty.

Apple announced yesterday that over 100,000 applications are now available in its App Store, an online service for the company's iPhone and iPod touch media player. Following the success of Apple's App Store, other mobile platform vendors including Google and Research In Motion have launched similar services, through which individual developers can promote applications they build specifically for each platform, while consumers can choose from thousands of applications tailored for their needs.

According to an Apple statement, new numbers of applications and downloads showed the popularity of Apple's service, the largest of its kind in the world, among developers and users.

A former top executive of a major California tomato processor has agreed to plead guilty to taking part in a four-year conspiracy in which the firm bribed food companies and shipped mislabeled tomato paste that exceeded government mold standards.

The case against Alan Huey, the former senior vice president for sales and marketing at SK Foods, is the latest in a long-running federal corruption investigation of the company and its customers' agents. SK Foods produces about 15 percent of the bulk tomato paste sold to U.S. makers of salsa, ketchup and juices. But prosecutors say the tomato paste and other intentionally mislabeled products did not constitute a health hazard.
